    Minor crime and gun control trivia......
    Got the new 1988 FBI crime stats.  Looked up my favorite gun
control town -- Morton Grove, Illinois --  to see how they have been
doing since they banned handguns completely.  Compared to the previous
year, the crime total there was:

                               1987        1988

    Population               23,719      23,529
    Murder                        0           1
    Rape                          0           0
    Armed Robbery                 7           8
    Aggravated Assault           16          17
    Burglary                    104         149
    Larceny Theft               546         620

   On the other hand, the Illinois state totals -- rates per 100K
   population, were:

    Murder                      8.3         8.6
    Rape                        38.4        38.5
    Armed Robbery               314         313
    Aggravated Assault          435         451
    Burglary                  1,124       1,129
    Larceny theft             2,957       3,076

    So, while crime stayed about flat in Illinois, it edged up
slightly in Morton Grove, where they also had a whopping 43% rise in
burglary.
    Which probably says almost nothing, except that burglars probably
like places where they aren't likely to get shot at.
